PLANO, Texas, March 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Argon Medical Devices, Inc., a leading provider of device solutions for Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, and Oncology, introduces the TRAVELER™ Portal Vein Access Series as the newest addition to its portal vein access product portfolio. The product line is designed to meet the challenging needs of physicians accessing the portal vein through the liver during Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) procedures. TRAVELER supplements Argon’s notable 2021 launch of SCORPION® which also supports TIPS procedures.
TRAVELER is designed to improve component visualization and durability, which are common challenges of the TIPS procedure. “Several innovative features of the TRAVELER set make it easier to access the portal vein compared to other sets on the market. Firstly, the metal cannula is very robust, and the shaping tool allows it to be curved to great degrees without compromising component integrity. Secondly, the puncture needle is longer and seems sharper, making it easier to pass through severely fibrotic liver parenchyma and reach the portal vein, even when there is very distorted anatomy” said Dr. Donna D’Souza, an Interventional Radiologist at the University of Minnesota.
“Our mission is to improve the lives of patients and caregivers through the innovation, manufacturing, and delivery of best-in-class medical devices. Thus, we were compelled to act when we identified an opportunity to simplify complex portal vein access procedures for our customers. We are excited to launch our new TRAVELER products for this purpose and see the positive impact they have on portal access procedures and outcomes in accordance with our mission.” said George Leondis, President & CEO of Argon Medical.
The TRAVELER Series, which includes TRAVELER™16, TRAVELER™21, and TRAVELER™38, is now available in the United States and Canada. “The number of TIPS procedures performed worldwide is increasing as the incidence of liver cirrhosis grows. The advantages offered by our TRAVELER products may make these procedures more efficient for the Interventional Radiologists performing them and the patients they serve.” said Tom Younker, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Argon Medical.
This is the first of multiple new product launches expected from Argon Medical in 2023.
In this episode, host Dr. Chris Beck interviews interventional radiologist Dr. George Behrens about how he built a robust multidisciplinary portal hypertension clinic in a community hospital, tips for common challenges during a TIPS, and post-TIPS management.

Headquartered in Frisco, Texas, Argon offers a broad line of best-in-class products for Interventional Radiology, Interventional Oncology and Vascular Surgery procedures. Thanks to outstanding service, reliability, and quality, Argon maintains loyal strategic partnerships with physicians, clinicians, medical device distributors and strategic OEMs.
Argon was founded in 1972 producing procedural guidewires, gradually expanding to introduce disposable packs, special procedure kits and trays for Cardiology and Critical Care procedures.
“We have been dedicated in our mission to improve the lives of patients and caregivers for 50 years.”
In 2009, Argon’s strategic direction shifted to focus on products for Interventional Radiology. More recently, the company bolstered its research and development capabilities, leading to introduction of organically developed products including the Scorpion® Portal Vein Access Series, Halo™ single-loop snares, BioPince® Ultra Full Core Biopsy Instrument, and Single- and Triple-Loop vena cava filter retrieval kits.

FRISCO, Texas, Nov. 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Argon Medical Devices, Inc., a global manufacturer of specialty devices for Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, and Interventional Cardiology, formally announced the launch of two unique portal vein access sets intended for transjugular liver access in diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The SCORPION® Portal Vein Access Series addresses the common challenges physicians encounter when placing a Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) or conducting other portal vein access procedures. The Scorpion Series includes two sets, Scorpion® and Scorpion®X, which offer improved visualization, revolutionary navigation control, and enhanced durability to augment existing procedural techniques.
The Scorpion Portal Vein Access Series utilizes a patented curve-in-curve system to offer physicians 360-degree range of motion with the needle or stylet used to access the portal vein. Each curved component can work together or independently to accurately steer the device through the liver to the intended target. Existing systems utilize only a single curve limiting the steerability of the needle or stylet. The Scorpion Series’ novel design was created by Dr. Lowell Kahn, a Vascular and Diagnostic Interventional Radiologist located in Springfield, MA., in conjunction with Hatch Medical, L.L.C.
“Establishing access to the portal venous system is often the longest and most challenging part of many procedures. This is particularly true when the liver is diseased, making the anatomy irregular. I designed the SCORPION’s independently controlled dual curves to improve the physician’s ability to navigate through liver parenchyma and reduce the number of attempts necessary to establish access to the portal vein,” said Dr. Khan.
“Argon Medical is proud to add the Scorpion Series into our product portfolio. 2021 is our ‘Year of Innovation,’ and we continue to develop and deliver innovative products to the interventional market. Launching Scorpion demonstrates our desire and ability to innovate to improve the lives of our customers and the patients they treat.” said George Leondis, CEO of Argon Medical
The Scorpion Portal Vein Access sets are currently available in the United States. Scorpion® is licensed by Argon Medical and is a trademark of Hatch Medical, L.L.C.
FRISCO, Texas, Aug. 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Argon Medical Devices, Inc., a leading manufacturer of medical devices for interventional procedures, announced the commercial launch of SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheters in the United States and the European Union.
The SKATER™ Mini-Loop is a drainage catheter placed through the skin using imaging guidance as a minimally invasive way to remove or drain an unwanted fluid collection. The SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter is an expansion of Argon’s SKATER™ All-Purpose and Nephrostomy drainage portfolio, and it uses a 40% smaller loop to help secure the catheter and drain fluid from smaller cavities.
“Argon’s Mission is to deliver innovative, best-in-class medical devices to improve the customer experience and the lives of their patients. We are excited to complete our SKATER™ portfolio of drainage solutions and celebrate this next launch in our Year of Innovation,” said George A. Leondis, President and CEO of Argon Medical Devices.
“The SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter is easily inserted and forms a tight loop formation to prevent drainage occlusion. Unlike other drainage catheters in the class, SKATER™ Mini-Loop is compatible with alcohol and has durability to resist kinking, which is important to me.” said Dr. Sujoy Menon, an Interventional Radiologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Menon and Dr. Sayed Ali, a resident of the Rutgers Medical School, were the first physicians in the United States to use the SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter.
Argon Medical Devices introduced several new devices in the biopsy, drainage, and vascular therapy segments in 2020, despite the global pandemic. The company refers to 2021 as its Year of Innovation because it plans to launch even more innovative new products throughout the year to help facilitate interventional vascular and oncology procedures.
